Deadly Truck Accident on I-35 Claims Two Lives

Two men were killed when the 18-wheeler they were traveling in crashed on Interstate 35 south of San Antonio last Friday afternoon. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a section of 1-35 was closed for three hours after the truck accident.

Investigators reported that the 18-wheeler rear-ended a heavy machine truck at 3:10 p.m. near Mile Marker 131, approximately a half-mile south of the intersection with FM 3175. The collision caused the tractor-trailer to crash and burn in the northbound lanes of the interstate near Lytle. Both the north and southbound lanes of the interstate were closed while firefighters put out the flames.

None of the drivers involved in the accident were immediately identified. The driver of the heavy machinery truck was injured and was taken to a hospital.

It took hours to extricate the badly burned bodies of the two men from the 18-wheeler. The remains were taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Investigators believe that the tractor-trailer may have been coming from Mexico. Also, an Illinois license plate was recovered from the accident scene. However, the investigation is still in the preliminary stages.

Although the southbound lanes were reopened about an hour after the truck accident, the northbound lanes remained closed for three hours, causing a traffic standstill for at least two miles.

A strong odor of diesel fuel and burned plastic filled the air for almost an hour after the crash. The 18-wheeler was covered in gray ash, but officials said there was no release of hazardous materials.

Investigators are trying to determine the identities of the victims and what caused the crash.
