Wrong-way driver in deadly Texas big rig crash admits to drinking

A recent post discussed the deadly 18-wheeler accident that occurred in Fort Worth this week, temporarily closing Texas Interstate 30. The 18-wheeler had been carrying gasoline and exploded, killing the driver, when someone traveling the wrong way down the interstate hit it head on. Now the wrong-way driver has admitted to drinking ten beers prior to causing the crash.

According to Fort Worth police, a 23-year-old has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. The man, who local news reporters were told had just moved to Fort Worth a few months ago with the hope of starting a restaurant, is being held at the Fort Worth jail after being treated for his injuries.

The man told local reporters from his jail cell that he has no memory of getting onto Interstate 30, going the wrong direction, running into the gasoline truck or the huge explosion that followed. He said he remembered drinking about ten beers that night, but does not remember anyone telling him not to drive home.

Apparently, the man was awoken while in the hospital by a police officer who told him that he had killed someone and was going to jail.

The man told reporters that he was very sorry for causing the accident that took the life of a 45-year-old fuel tanker truck driver, who had been on his last deliveries of the night when the accident occurred. The driver left behind three children and a wife.

Now authorities are investigating the establishment at which the man had been drinking that night to see if the bartender knew or should have known that the man was drunk, but continued to serve him anyway. If this is the case, the owner of the bar could face jail time and a possible revocation of the bar's liquor license.
