Texas manufacturing company fined $50k by OSHA

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has established extensive rules and regulations that must be followed in workplaces to prevent work-related injuries in Texas and elsewhere. When companies fail to follow these safety regulations, OSHA may cite and fine the companies for noncompliance.

On Nov. 22, OSHA cited Ameri-Tech Industries LLC, also known as Ameri-Tech Building Systems, for 16 serious violations for safety hazards found at the company's manufacturing plant in Troy, Texas. The citation was issued following an inspection on June 21.

OSHA inspectors visited the Texas facility after receiving reports of an unsafe working environment. Upon inspection, the company was cited for failing to meet numerous safety requirements, including failing to provide fall protection, failing to provide protective measures on machinery and failing to provide on-site fire extinguishers.

In all, the company was cited for 16 serious safety violations, which OSHA defines as when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known.

OSHA proposed $52,200 in fines for the violations. The company now has the opportunity to respond to the allegations.

"Ameri-Tech Building Systems exposed its workers to falls and electrical hazards, among other dangerous conditions, both of which can cause serious and possibly fatal injuries," OSHA's area director in Austin said in a press release. "It is the employer's responsibility to assess hazards, and provide a safe and healthful workplace."

Ameri-Tech Building Systems is lucky that the OSHA inspection took place and pointed out these hazards before a worker was seriously injured or killed. Had that been the case, the company could have faced much higher financial costs resulting from a personal injury lawsuit.
