Gas line explosion north of Dallas leaves 2 workers injured

On Tuesday morning, two people were injured after a ruptured gas line caught fire and sent flames spewing 50 feet into the air. The explosion occurred at a construction site in McKinney, Texas, and it was reported that the fire could be seen from close to 15 miles away. McKinney is located about 30 miles north of Dallas.

Emergency responders received a call about the fire at about 8:45 a.m. after a six-person Atmos Energy work crew ruptured a six-inch gas line with a backhoe while working in the area. It wasn't until about 9:45 a.m. that supply to the gas line was shut down and the fire slowly went down as the gas burned away.

Witnesses said that they were rattled by the sound of gas hissing and the subsequent explosion. A witness who works at a golf course across the street from the scene of the accident said he heard the hissing sound for 10 or 15 seconds before the loud "boom" followed. He said he saw workers who appeared "pretty shaken up" running from the scene.

At first it was unclear how many workers had been hurt in the explosion, but Atmos recently released a statement saying that just two people were treated for injuries and another was treated for anxiety. A spokeswoman for the local fire department said it was very fortunate that no one was killed or more seriously injured.

She said the construction site was within city limits but is located in a fairly remote area, so no homes were affected. However, several vehicles and pieces of construction equipment were destroyed. Additionally, the event caused a power outage in the area for several hours.

It is likely that workers involved in the accident should be able to qualify for workers' compensation to help cover medical expenses, lost wages and other related costs, regardless of who was at fault for the accident. Personal injury lawsuits are also a possibility if a negligent third party shares responsibility for what happened.
