Texas city worker killed while mounting tire on road grader

Workplace accidents occur for a variety of reasons in Texas and elsewhere. Sometimes safety breaches are to blame. Other times, workers just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. No matter what the cause of a workplace accident may be, workers who suffered injuries may be entitled to workers' compensation to help cover their medical bills, lost wages and other related costs.

Unfortunately, some workers don't survive workplace accidents. When this is the case, the deceased worker's family may also be entitled to workers' compensation death benefits. If negligence on behalf of the employer or a third party was to blame for the accident, the family could pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the liable parties.

It is possible that a wrongful death lawsuit or workers' compensation death benefits could result in the wake of a workplace accident that occurred in Amarillo, Texas, on Thursday and claimed the life of a city worker. The worker is said to have been including an OTR tire when a lock ring exploded off the assembly and struck him in the head and chest.

Officials said emergency workers were called to the scene at 10:20 a.m., but they couldn't do enough to save the man, who was pronounced dead at 10:29 a.m. According to reports, the lock ring "weighed about 10 pounds" and the worker was using it to lock the tire into the rim when it flew off and hit him.

The report also indicated that the tire, which the worker was mounting on a road grader, was not in a safety cage when the accident occurred.

At this point, it is not clear if there was any negligence that contributed to the accident. However, either way it is likely that the family of the deceased worker will be entitled to compensation under state law.
