Widow sues following UTD crane accident

Back in July, we wrote about a tragic crane accident that claimed the lives of two construction workers at a job site on the University of Texas at Dallas campus. Earlier this month, it was reported that the family of one of the workers has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the workers' employer and another company.

According to reports, the construction crew was dismantling a crane at the university's Arts and Technology Building on July 7 when the crane collapsed, crushing the two construction workers. Following the accident, a local fire chief guessed a sudden gust of wind was likely to blame for the collapse.

However, the widow of one of the workers charges that the crane was in a dangerous condition and this is what led to the fatal accident. She sued Harrison Hoist, Hunt Construction Group and Baten Steel Erectors, charging that the companies should have known that the dangerous condition of the crane was putting workers at risk.

The widow and her son filed suit in county court and are reportedly seeking punitive damages for gross negligence, wrongful death and other claims. They argue that the companies had a duty to repair the dangerous condition of the crane and that duty was breached. The total amount sought has not been reported.

While no sum of money could ever take away the pain of losing a loved one, it can help pay for costs related with the death and provide the family with financial security during this difficult time. Punitive damages also serve as a deterrent so that similar accidents can be avoided in the future.
