2 dead following LA chemical plant explosion

On Thursday, we reported that several workers were injured following a checmical plant explosion southeast of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Over the weekend, we learned that two of the workers had died as a result of their injuries. The explosion and fire occured at the Williams Olefins plant on LA 3115 sometime around 8:30 a.m. Two workers are still recieving treatment for their burn injuries at a local hosptial.

Officials have said that there were more than 800 workers at the plant when the accident occured. Of those workers, more than 70 suffered injuries. A burn center at a local hospital recieved a total of 19 patients following the accident. The first worker who died passed away on Thursday. He was a 29-year-old Hammon, Louisiana, resident, according to reports. The second worker died on Friday afternoon, it appears. He was 47.

Officials have still not been able to determined a cause of the blast. It is likely that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is working hard to determine if workplace safety hazards played a role in the accident. If so, the plant could potentially face serious OSHA fines. Additionally, the plant may also face wrongful death and personal injury claims brought by the injured workers and their families.

Deadly fires and explosions are all too common in Louisiana and Texas. One of the reasons personal injury law is important is to remind employers that they are responsible for keeping their employees out of harm's way. In Louisiana, injured workers and their families have one year from the date of the incident causing injury to file a negligence claim. In Texas, negligence claims must be filed within two years. This is known as a "statute of limitations."
