Texas construction fatalities dropped between 2008 and 2011

According to a new report from the Associated General Contractors of America, construction fatality and injury rates in Texas are declining at a rate faster than other states as a result of the safety efforts being made by contractors. The report was based on safety data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The report stated that Texas went from having a construction fatality rate of 13.1 deaths per 100,000 workers in 2008 to a fatality rate of 9.7 per 100,000 workers in 2011, the most recent year for which data has been collected. The 26 percent drop brought Texas from having the 32nd highest fatality rate in 2008 to the 20th, the report stated. Although, the data only included 41 states and Washington D.C.

Many contractors in Texas have been making efforts to reduce instances of fatal workplace accidents by as much as possible, the report stated. One way contractors attempted to do this was by participating in a statewide halt in construction called Safety Stand Down, which gave employers the opportunity to talk to their employees about safety.

Additionally, a spokesman for the Associated General Contractors of America said many contractors have been developing new safety programs aimed at reducing the risk of falls at construction sites as well as accidents involving heavy equipment. Heat-related safety issues are also being targeted for the summer months, he said.

Even with the decline, construction accidents remain a huge problem in the state of Texas and claim far too many lives each year. When a construction worker is killed on the job, his or her employer could potentially be held accountable if safety hazards or other negligence was involved. Negligent third-parties may also be held liable in civil lawsuits.
