Houston-area construction worker killed in industrial accident

Just a few miles southeast of Houston, a construction worker was trapped under soil-compacting equipment late this past Monday night; he died a few hours later.

The 49-year-old man was reportedly driving a compactor over a dirt pile when the heavy equipment overturned, pinning him beneath. After the industrial accident, he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The man was working as part of a crew widening League City Parkway. The parkway is about 25 miles southeast of Houston off of Interstate 45.

In an unrelated incident just a few miles away, two construction workers were injured after being thrown from a truck on a State Highway 35 worksite.

The men were reportedly in the back of a moving GMC pick-up truck when the vehicle hit a mound of dirt.

Pearland police officers responding to a call regarding the accident said they found a worker "on his back in obvious pain," according to a media report. The other man was found near the truck.

Both men were taken to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel.

Police said that when they talked to the driver of the truck, he said he had been distracted by the actions of a backhoe just prior to the accident. A police report stated that the truck was vaulted into the air by the collision, throwing the men from the truck bed.

After 72 hours, both men had been treated for their injuries and had gone back to work widening the roadway.
