Overboard offshore oilfield supply boat worker reportedly lost

In Houston, offshore oilfield workers appreciate the risks taken as part of the hard work done by the men and women who work the supply boats bringing needed items to the platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Unfortunately, one of those supply boat workers recently went overboard in a maritime accident. Though the U.S. Coast Guard spent three days in a determined search of a vast area, it said this past Monday that it was suspending its rescue efforts.

The Coast Guard said that it had carried out a dozen separate search missions for the worker. The searches covered 2,734 nautical miles of the Gulf, using a C-130 aircraft, as well as helicopters and cutters, without finding him.

The man worked for a Raceland, Louisiana, firm and went overboard this past weekend, about 60 miles to the southwest of Port Fourchon.

Port Fourchon is Louisiana's southernmost port. It sits about 375 miles east of Houston.

According to a media report, this was the second such incident in the past few weeks. In late October, an oilfield worker also fell into the Gulf. Divers later recovered his body after he had fallen off of a platform about 75 miles southeast of Lake Charles.

The man had apparently been working for a Houston-based company that was dismantling the platform at a well that had been plugged and abandoned last year.

In these kinds of tragedies, families might well wonder if they can file claims for compensation under the Jones Act. This complicated area of law is best addressed by attorneys from a law firm experienced in successfully traversing Jones Act cases.
