Proposed pipeline neighbors fear for safety

Here in Houston, our media sometimes glosses over concerns about worker safety in the oil and natural gas industries. But in places around the U.S. where the industries have recently launched explorations or are engaging in new extraction processes or erecting pipelines, people see the industry with fresh sets of eyes.

A recent article about people in Kentucky who live near where a proposed pipeline would transport natural gas described the fears some of them have that pipeline accidents could occur and cause injuries or fatalities.

Fears have apparently intensified in recent days in the aftermath of a gas line explosion about halfway between Lexington and Nashville, and a sinkhole that collapsed about 70 miles from the explosion.

"We feel that these are a warning to Kentucky that this sort of pipeline construction project, the Bluegrass Pipeline, is extremely dangerous," said a man who lives less than a mile from where the proposed pipeline would carry natural gas liquids.

The man noted recent pipeline ruptures caused by the ground around the pipes collapsing.

He said the Adair County explosion “is another awful example of how dangerous all gas pipelines are.”

The Bluegrass Pipeline will cut across 13 counties in the state.

An executive with one of the companies involved in the project said he and his firm are doing all they can to make the pipeline safe, including following “all the rules and regulations to the best we possibly can.”

No matter the promises made by executives, the reality is that the injuries caused by explosions, fires, ruptures or other pipeline events can be devastating. Those serious injuries can require intensive, expensive medical care and long periods of recuperation.

A personal injury attorney can help the injured to pursue full compensation for those damages.
