Texas construction worker killed in accident

Not far south of Houston, the Brazos River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The river runs cold at this time of year.

The river was the site of a recent construction accident to our north, where work on a new football stadium is taking place. One worker was killed and another injured when a construction platform collapsed and sent them plunging into the icy water.

Both men were harnessed to the platform, which was connected to a crane being used to construct a pedestrian bridge for the new Baylor University football stadium in Waco.

One of the workers was able to detach his harness from the submerged equipment and surface. He was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for hypothermia.

The other worker was not as fortunate. Diving teams had to search the river for almost four hours before they found his body.

Winds in the area were reportedly up to 18 mph around the time of the 4 p.m. tragedy. A Waco police officer said it wasn’t clear if wind had contributed to the equipment’s collapse.

This deadly accident is less than two months after a fatal fall at a construction site at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field.

In that case, the family of the worker has reportedly hired an attorney and filed a wrongful death lawsuit against construction companies involved in the project. A news article we read on that tragedy indicated the worker was operating a small loader when a large chunk of concrete fell and toppled the loader over a ramp.

The worker fell out of the loader on the way down, landing on his back on a rubble pile. The 28-year-old father of two died hours later.
