Veteran city worker killed by garbage truck

When it comes to workplace safety in Houston, experience counts. Besides proper training and equipment, having several years under your belt at a certain job likely will help you avoid certain work accidents.

Unfortunately, even veteran employees can get injured in a workplace incident. Sometimes, the accident is so severe that the worker does not survive. He or she usually leaves behind friends and loved ones, who are forced to go on.

In an example from another state, a man who worked for his city's streets department for more than 20 years was killed in a horrific accident. He was hit by the gate of a dump truck, which fatally injured him. Few details are provided by The World, such as where the gate struck him, why he was caught in his path, and whether it could have been prevented.

A fatal workplace accident costs the world more than an employee. They are also husbands, wives, parents, friends. The victim in this case is survived by a wife and four children. Besides his work in the streets department, he often volunteered for other municipal projects, and served on the school board.

We do not yet know whether this man's death was an unavoidable accident, or due to negligence. When someone is killed on the job because his or her employer did not provide reasonable protection, the victim's family has the right to pursue a wrongful death claim against the employer. Nothing can bring back the victim, but a civil claim may be a form of justice for many grieving families.
