2 Texas road construction workers killed by alleged drunk driver

Road construction work can be dangerous. Those who fix the highways in Texas often work just a few feet away from speeding cars and trucks. If one of the passing drivers disregards signs and cones directing him or her away from the construction site, a worker could get hit and severely injured.

A car accident at a road construction site on Interstate 10 in El Paso cost the lives of two men recently. Few details were available as of May 12, but authorities seem to believe that a soldier stationed at nearby Fort Bliss was responsible. His car crashed through a traffic barrier and ran into the victims while they were working.

The soldier was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. It was nearly 2:30 a.m. when the crash occurred, so it is possible that darkness and intoxication combined to stop the suspect from noticing warnings that road construction was going on ahead of him.

The suspect is 18 years old. If he was intoxicated, he may have been illegally served alcohol at a bar or restaurant. If so, that establishment may also have to take some of the responsibility for the workers’ deaths. El Paso police and Fort Bliss were working together on the investigation, perhaps partially to determine where the suspect got the alcohol.

Being the victim of a drunk driver is something that no road construction worker wants to think about, but something that can occur nevertheless. Families of workers killed because of negligence may receive some peace of mind, at least from a financial point of view, by filing a wrongful death claim against those responsible.
