Logging truck accident causes 2 worker deaths, 19 injuries

A semi truck accident that killed two people and injured 19 others, including the truck driver, appears to have been caused by a blown tire. This terrible tragedy is an example of the sort of dangers that truck drivers risk every time they head out on the road. In addition, the victims were workers on a road construction crew.

The truck was hauling logs on June 2 when one of its tires suddenly burst. The driver, a 39-year-old man, lost control and the truck overturned, spilling logs onto the road. Some of the logs fell onto the road workers, causing numerous injuries. Two men were killed. They were 51 and 40.

Nineteen more workers survived, but were harmed by the logs. According to a hospital official, 12 sustained “major injuries.” No further details were available, but the workers may have suffered serious injuries to their heads, spines or limbs. It could be months before they recover, or they could be permanently disabled.

The local sheriff described the accident scene as “pretty horrific” and, added that the rescue efforts were “very chaotic.” Teams used cross steel rebar rods to free the construction workers.

The truck driver did not sustain major injuries.

A tire may blow because it is worn and should have been replaced. Or an object in the road can puncture it. Either way, a large vehicle with a sudden flat tire can easily go out of control and cause serious damage, both to other vehicles and, more importantly, to the driver and other people.
