Man killed in work accident with garbage truck

In a few moments, a life can be taken in a workplace accident. The death takes a person away before his or her time. Each of us has many different relationships in our lives. We may be spouses, parents, children, siblings, co-workers, friends. Almost every fatal work accident causes sorrow for many people in the community where it takes place.

The death of a 51-year-old man on June 9 provides a sad example. The man worked for a sanitation company. He was helping a garbage truck driver unload his truck at his workplace’s transfer station.

When the truck was empty, the man was standing between its lift gate and the rear of the vehicle. The gate was raised during the unloading, but somehow, the truck pulled forward and the gate went down, apparently striking or pinning the victim. He died as a result.

The victim was married. He was also a father and grandfather. Besides his family, he will be missed by his friends. He was a volunteer firefighter, and had a second job at a local bowling alley. A local radio personality recalled how he would regularly call into her station, and how close he was with his family.

The owner of the sanitation company also had fond memories of the victim. He called him an “excellent employee” and thought of him as “just like one of my kids.” The company had never had a fatal accident before in 44 years in operation, the owner said.

The incident is under investigation. It is not yet clear why the truck began moving while the victim was standing in the path of the gate.
