Motorized cart pushes casino worker out of 3rd story window

When we talk about workers being killed in accidental falls, we usually think about victims who worked in construction or other fields that routinely involve working outside at a significant height over the ground. However, sometimes a Houston worker suffers a fall in a way he or she might never have imagined.

In an out-of-state example, a man was killed after falling out of a third-story window at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The worker was inside the casino’s conference center when the work accident occurred.

A witness said that the victim was unloading audio equipment from a maintenance cart, when the cart suddenly went into reverse. Co-workers tried to save the victim by restraining the cart, but it was too powerful to hold onto.

The cart hit the victim and sent him through the window. He fell to the ground, where he died of his injuries.

One obvious question about this tragedy, which local police are investigating, is why the cart came to life while it was being unloaded. Possible factors include the cart malfunctioning, or another worker starting it somehow.

The victim’s age is not given. Nor is his family makeup mentioned, though MGM said his identity was being withheld until the family was notified. He was an audio/visual technician for the casino. The witness, a co-worker, called the victim kind-hearted and generous.

In a statement, MGM said the incident was a “tragic accident.” The company said that the Occupational Safety and Health Association “has been notified,” so it does not seem that OSHA has begun investigating yet.
