Ladle fall at Texas steel mill leaves 2 workers with burn injuries

Recently at a steel mill in Guadalupe County, a ladle containing 120 tons of molten steel fell about 30 feet and crashed to the floor, spilling molten metal and seriously injuring two workers. One man reportedly suffered burn injuries on his hands and leg, and the other man suffered burns on as much as 80 percent of his body. Both men were taken to a hospital, and the more severely burned worker was in critical condition.

The accident, which was the second at CMC Steel in less than a month, caused a fire at the facility, which had to be evacuated. Firefighters arrived on the scene, and additional crews were called in when a gas valve ruptured. After the area was secured, the mill started up again, but the melt shop remained shut down while officials investigated the cause of the accident.

Firefighters were also called to CMC in July when crews reportedly fought a blaze for 15 hours. The fire is believed to have started when a worker began cutting on a scrap vehicle that had not been emptied of fuel. There were no reports of injuries in that accident.

If you work in a heavy industrial environment such as a steel mill, then every shift poses serious risks of injury. Even so, you are entitled to a reasonably safe work environment. Whether you were injured in the course of your employment or because of another party's negligence, you have a right to seek compensation for your injuries.

Industrial accidents often leave workers and their families struggling with emotional trauma, medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering. These kinds of damages can be addressed in a number of ways, including a negligence claim, a product liability claim or a claim under the state's workers' compensation program.
