1-pound tape measure hits, kills delivery worker on construction site

If you're a construction worker who has built one of Texas's many high-rise buildings, then you know that much can go wrong at a great height. You and your tools and building materials must be secured to protect you and others from falling or being struck. Failure to take these safety precautions can have devastating consequences.

The Daily News reports that a man in New Jersey was recently killed after being struck on the head by a one-pound tape measure that fell 50 stories from another worker's belt. On the way down, the tape measure hit a piece of construction equipment then ricocheted and hit the man in the head. He had reportedly paused on the construction site to speak with a worker in a pickup truck.

The badly injured man, who was not wearing a hard hat at the time of the accident, died after being transported to a hospital. He was reportedly employed by a trucking company hired to deliver sheet rock for a company based in North Carolina. According to police, a hard hat was found in the man's truck.

Being hit by falling objects or equipment is unfortunately a reality on construction sites in Texas and throughout the country. These accidents are preventable, however, and injured workers or their grieving families should explore their legal options for obtaining compensation for damages. If negligence on the part of a co-worker or employer results in a worker's death, then the family of the deceased may have grounds for a wrongful death claim.
