Common causes of TBI also common causes of work injuries

Traumatic brain injuries can range from mild to severe, but research continues to show that even the subtle effects of TBI can permanently alter a person's health and behavior. In fact, brain injury is one of the major causes of disability and death in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), TBI contributes to roughly 30 percent of all injury deaths.

The CDC also provides statistics on the known causes of TBI, and the most common causes will undoubtedly be familiar to Texas workers.

Just as falls are a common cause of injury on Texas job sites, falls were the cause of 40 percent of all TBIs that resulted in death, hospitalization or emergency care from 2006 to 2010. That means falling accidents are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury in the United States.

The second leading cause of TBI was unintentional blunt trauma, which accounts for 15.5 percent of brain injuries. Unintentional blunt trauma to the head happens on job sites when a worker is hit in the head by equipment or some other object.

Motor vehicle accidents -- the third leading cause -- accounted for 14 percent of TBIs. For more on work-related crashes, see our previous post, "Work-related auto accidents up amid Texas fracking boom."

At more than 10 percent, the fourth leading cause of TBI was assault, which is rare on job sites, but assault in the workplace is nonetheless a reality.
