Galley hand sues Houston oil and gas company after trip-and-fall on offshore rig

Employers are obligated to take reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of workers. Such precautions may include appropriate training and provision of necessary tools and safety gear. If an employer doesn't provide you with these things and nonetheless tells you to do a job that results in injury to you, then the employer may be liable for your injury.

With that in mind, consider a lawsuit recently filed in Galveston. According to the suit, in November 2014, a galley hand on an offshore oil rig was told to carry a heavy load with no other workers to assist him.

While carrying the load, the seaman tripped and fell down some stairs. His lawsuit states that the resulting injuries have caused physical pain and suffering, disability and disfigurement. He is also seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost work time and lost wages. His injuries have prevented him from carrying on with life as it was before the accident, according to the suit.

In this case, the seaman was working on the rig for a contractor. The contractor is not named as a defendant in the negligence suit, but the oil and gas company that operates the rig is named as a defendant. The seaman claims the company neglected to take reasonable precautions to ensure his safety. The suit also claims that the company failed to provide the assistance he needed to complete his duties and failed to provide a safe workplace.
