Data on Texas job injuries, illnesses and deaths

October proved to be something of a mixed bag when it comes to reports on job-related injuries and deaths. On one hand, as reported by early in the month, the Texas Department of Insurance indicates that preliminary data is that the number of fatal occupational injuries in the state increased by 3 percent in 2014. That's compared to 2013. Final numbers for 2014 aren't expected to be made public until spring 2016.

Meanwhile, at the end of October, the same publication cited TDI numbers indicting that rates of overall work-related injuries and illnesses declined in 2014. And, as has been the case for more than a decade, the Texas rate in this category continues to run below the national average.

Overall, nonfatal injuries and illnesses in private industry were recorded at a rate of 2.4 cases per 100 full-time employees in 2014. In 2013, the rate was 2.6. Injuries that resulted in deaths in 2013 were noted at 4.4 per 100,000 workers. In 2014, the initial figures show that deaths rose by 3 percent.

And while workers in the transportation sectors appear to be the ones taking the hardest hits, the TDI reports that construction and resource extraction workers run second in terms of rates of fatalities suffered.

Anyone in Texas and Louisiana who works in the construction or industrial sectors knows that the jobs can be hazardous. When accidents due to employer negligence happen, injuries can lead to major financial difficulties. To overcome them, the help of an experienced attorney in protecting injured workers' rights can be crucial.
